Welcome to Dapplegray PTA!
President's Message - February 8, 2021
Hello Dapplegray Family,
February is here! The month of Valentine's love and of the Lunar New Year!
Speaking of love, one of my favorite quotes about teachers is: "Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning." Let's take this month to show our teachers some love for teaching our children to love learning.
The Lunar New Year will be celebrated this year on February 12 and will begin the Year of the Ox. Oxes are known for being loyal and hardworking. You know who else is known for being loyal and hardworking? Our PTA volunteers! I am so grateful to the amazing parents who dedicate their time and talents to benefit the Dapplegray community. Their gift of service is invaluable.
Are you interested in giving your time and talents to benefit our Dapplegray kids? Your involvement not only benefits your own child or children, it also is a gift to yourself. Get involved and suddenly you will have a group of parent friends to laugh with and to help you when you need support. We are fortunate to have many virtual events coming up, and we can always use the extra help! Or, get involved on the PTA Board next year. You can nominate yourself or someone you know who would like to get involved. All are welcome! Click here to fill out the nomination form
I hope you all have a very happy Valentine's Day and may the Year of the Ox bring you all good health and good fortune!

President's Message - January 11, 2021
Dear Dapplegray Family,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful and relaxing winter break and that your new year is off to a great start.
Last week was a very tough week for our nation no matter your political leaning or beliefs. I hope you and your family are taking care of yourselves and hugging each other tightly. Now more than ever, it is a time to unite and to help each other. I hope we can all find ways to serve others and make our community a better place. What better day to do so than on Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, which is a National Day of Service. The Americorps describes this day of service: “The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 18, 2021, is the 26th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as ‘a day on, not a day off,’ MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.” There are volunteer opportunities available at: www.laworks.com/MLK https://www.nationalservice.gov/serve/search, or come up with one on your own with your family. Please share your day of service experience with us on social media!
In that same vein, I am so pleased to report on the important work that the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee has been doing since last summer. This passionate committee of Dapplegray parents and teachers meets monthly and will be rolling out some transformative activities and events. In this issue of the Colt Chronicle, you will see the DEI committee’s “What We Are” reading, watching, listening to, and checking out. The committee also encourages our Dapplegray community to virtually attend the PVPUSD’s Webinar “Talking to Your Children About Race and Racism” with Dr. Tyrone Howard. The first of three webinars is this Thursday at 6pm. Finally, the DEI committee is encouraging our Dapplegray students to participate in the Palos Verdes Library District in partnership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority “The Living History Museum of African American Heroes.” The flyer is below with submissions due on January 31. Please share on social media if your child participates!
Finally, we hope to see you at the PTA at large meeting tomorrow night at 6:30 PM via zoom. All are welcome and we hope to see you there!
President's Message - December 7, 2020:
Dear Dapplegray Family,
Happy December! 2020 is almost over and we have nearly made it through a challenging and unprecedented year. As we wind down 2020, I know we are all reflecting on times of happiness and joy, times of sadness and loss, and everything in between. Mrs. Stutzel and the Dapplegray teachers and staff have worked so hard to adapt to a distance learning model while staying positive and focused on our children's education and well-being. The parents have also worked tirelessly to adapt and support the students. And, our wonderful students have given their best to stay focused and motivated throughout this school year. PTA is so proud of our community for pulling together to make the best of a difficult situation.
Through all of it, we hope that you have felt the support of Dapplegray PTA. We gave it our best to stand strong to support all children in our community whether they were in the hybrid, DLA, or independent study program. We found new ways to keep our community connected through the welcome back decorations at the start of the school year, the Milk, Cookies and Bookies event, virtual evening PTA meetings, the Red Ribbon Week/Halloween drive-through parade, the Pumpkin Carving Contest, canned/boxed food drive, virtual class parties, virtual Reflections Art program, the online Holiday Boutique, mindfulness instruction by Marie-Sophie Coster for parents and students, and the special welcome back surprises awaiting our TK and Kinder kids as they return to campus today. The Dapplegray PTA Executive Team and Chairpersons worked hard this summer and fall to make these events happen, and I could not be more proud of our volunteers. And, we thank all of you who donated to and joined PTA. Without you, we could not create these programs!
We look forward to more programs in 2021, including virtual field trips, Yellow Ribbon Week activities, Multicultural Day, and Arts Alive. And, it's not too late to donate to or to join PTA to ensure we can continue to offer innovative programs to keep our community connected. Our hope for 2021 is that our parents will continue to give their time and their talent to our schools, setting a great example of generosity and caring for all of our students. We hope our students will regularly see their friends again, enjoy their teachers in person, and spend their time on playgrounds, in sports, and bringing music and art to the world again.
Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Omisoka, or any other holiday in December, PTA wishes you the very best holiday season. Stay safe and healthy!
President's Message - November 9, 2020:
Happy November, Dapplegray Community! We hope this first newsletter in November finds you and your family safe and well. As we near the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to say how incredibly grateful we are for our community. We are so grateful for Mrs. Stutzel's leadership during this challenging school year. We are grateful for our teachers and their gift of giving their time and energy to our kids. We are especially thankful for the wonderful Halloween drive-thru parade. The traffic line was long, but the smiles went on for miles. It felt good to be back on campus even for a short time. Finally, we are grateful for our families. We are thankful for your dedication to your children and for joining PTA and giving your child and your family a voice.
We are looking forward to the Holiday Boutique coming up this month, November 18 - December 4. The boutique will be completely virtual and all proceeds will benefit the Volunteer Center of the Southbay. We hope your kiddos enjoy shopping for their family members and for a good cause!
Please join us at our next PTA meeting on Tuesday, November 10 at 6:30 PM. We kindly ask that you register in advance for the meeting and the Zoom information will be emailed to you.
We wish you all a wonderful November!

President's Message - September 28, 2020:
Dear Dapplegray Family,
We have made it through our first month of this unprecedented school year! To our teachers, thank you for all of the extra hours and energy you are putting into teaching our children on new platforms and with new curricula. Please know that we see you, support you, and stand with you during this challenging time. To our DG parents, thank you for supporting your children, joining the PTA, donating to the Booster Club, and showing up for zoom meetings. You are appreciated.
Dapplegray PTA has been hard at work preparing events for this school year. First, please join us for our next PTA Meeting on Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30 p.m. We ask that you register in advance by clicking on the link below. We will be discussing our upcoming events, including Red Ribbon Week and the Reflections Art Contest.
Second, if you haven't joined PTA yet, please do! Our goal is to reach 700 memberships this year. We are very close to meeting this goal! If we reach our goal, the whole school will be able to participate in a Milk, Cookies, and Bookies event. Families will be able to drive through school to pick up milk and cookies to enjoy at home while listening to a story read by Mrs. Stutzel and others of the Dapplegray staff. Please join today! Remember, you can sign up all parents, caregivers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, and friends!
We hope this next month brings your family joy and good health. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Your PTA is here for you!
President's Message - August 2020
Welcome to Dapplegray Elementary PTA!
Dear Dapplegray Families,
On behalf of the PTA, welcome back to our returning families! To our kindergarten and new families: we warmly welcome you to the Dapplegray community!
What is the PTA and who can be a Member?
PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. The PTA consists of parents and teachers working together to support and enrich all students. We support school staff, help promote student self-esteem and wellness, build community, and assist in efforts to solve school needs through volunteering and funding. We work in partnership with the Dapplegray Booster Club.
The PTA Board is made up of several officers and chairpersons; the association membership is made of parents, teachers, and students of Dapplegray. Who can be a member of PTA? If you’re a father, mother, protector, guardian, grandparent, student, and/or a person who teaches, instructs, or works at Dapplegray, Elementary, you can become a member!
PTA Programs & Fundraising
The Dapplegray PTA is an integral part of our school. Our primary objective is to provide our school with funds, programs, resources, and services that will enrich and maximize the education of every child and to benefit the school. Here are a few programs that we plan, sponsor and/or support throughout the year: Welcome Back Event, Holiday Boutique, Red Ribbon Week, Yellow Ribbon Week, Multicultural Day, Arts Alive, Read Across America, parent coffees, Donuts with Dearest, Diversity and Inclusion events and activities, Sweetheart Dance, Mock Election, Capitol Convoy, and Teacher Appreciation.
We are able to provide these activities because of the support of our Dapplegray families. We fundraise through our annual membership drive, donations, and other passive fundraisers throughout the year. We encourage you to give what your heart and wallet allow and please consider that some of our Dapplegray families are struggling financially during this time. To quote the amazing Glennon Doyle Melton of Momastery: “There is no such thing as other people’s children.” We are all in this together. Every penny of your donation goes back to Dapplegray and its students and teachers.
Right now, our Dapplegray PTA Membership Drive is under way! I encourage you all to renew or start a new membership for only $12 per person. Your membership gives you a voice at PTA meetings, access to the bi-weekly PTA newsletter featuring Dapplegray news and events, discounts at various businesses and – most importantly – you are supporting the oldest and largest child advocacy organization in the USA. Please click on the link to register and join Dapplegray PTA. https://www.memberplanet.com/packetview/dapplegrayelementary/2020-2021registration
Becoming a PTA member does not mean you are expected to give your time at school; however, for our community to be strong, everyone’s participation is essential. Many parents feel they cannot participate in the PTA because of work commitments. Please don’t let that discourage you! Whether you have 30 minutes or a few hours, your time, your ideas, your talents, and your voice are truly needed and appreciated. There are endless possibilities for mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, and uncles to contribute on campus and off campus, and we can match your time constraints and abilities to needed tasks. I promise that the time and effort you give to Dapplegray and PTA will be well worth your while – and fun!
As we are all intimately aware, this year will look very different from year’s past. That said, it is the mission of the PTA to support the educational and recreational needs of all of our students whether they are in the hybrid program, Distant Learning Academy, or independent study. We will promote communication between the administration, staff, parents, and the community. Accomplishing this goal takes the volunteerism of many, and we are very lucky to have a strong PTA Executive Board in place ready to meet the challenges we find our community in today.
And, we still have space for you if you’d like to join the PTA Executive Board! We would love for you to show your support by participating in the events and activities planned throughout the year whether they are virtual or in person when safe to do so. We are diligently working on firming up the calendar of events, and as soon as we have some concrete information, it will be posted to this website, Facebook, Instagram, and sent to you via email. This year in particular, the calendar will be fluid; so please make sure to check it often. In addition to events, we invite you to attend all or as many PTA meetings as you can. Typically, meetings are held once a month on the second Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. on campus, but for now our meetings will be held via Zoom. It is most likely that many of our traditional events will look and feel differently this school year; nonetheless, your time and involvement is essential to a strong and vibrant community.
I am looking forward to a year of growth as we learn how to navigate this school year. I look forward to meeting you all at the first PTA Association meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at 8:45 a.m. via Zoom. Please contact me anytime about PTA events, activities, or questions you may have.
We know this is not an easy time for our Dapplegray Families. We want to do everything possible to make this year special and memorable for all of our Dapplegray students. We may not be on campus together, but together or apart, we are all Colts at heart!
